Local
Indigenous children had the opportunity to participate in special
school holiday art workshops held at the Blue Mountains World Heritage
Institute (BMWHI) on September 26 and 27.
Initiated by BMWHI, the workshops were coordinated by local Aboriginal
artists Kim Mooney and Elly Chatfield, and proved to be great fun with
12 children attending.

Kim and
Elly designed the workshops to engage the children with the natural
environment and animals indigenous to the Blue Mountains including
red-eye tree frog, tawny frog mouth, kangaroo, possum, spider,
butterfly, eel and galah.
The
children were then asked to design artworks reflecting the animals and
their habitats. Kim and Elly were delighted with the artistic outcomes.
“The designs the children came up with were very innovative, and it was
magic to watch their level of excitement as they put together their
creations,” said Kim Mooney.
Cheryle Yin Lo, community cultural development officer for the BMWHI
said, “Given the success of these initial workshops, the Institute will
now look to running more in the future and involving a wider
cross-section of the community.”
