This forum examined topics associated with ‘managing a property’ in
the Hawkesbury, and land use both currently and historically. It allowed people who live in this heritage-rich region to discuss a range
of topical social, cultural, ecomonic and environmental issues.
The
forum was for everyone with an interest in the past, present and future
of the Hawkesbury area.
Topics included:
- History of landuse in the Hawkesbury
- Managing rural land
- Living with fire, wildlife and bushland
- Caring for Country
- Grants, assistance and advice
- Case studies from local landowners
- Local food and wine!
Issues of importance to our shared future included:
- History of land-use,
highlighting the changes that have affected the viability of
agriculture as well as the quality of natural ecosystems.
- Pressures
on landholders, including weeds, declining water quality, bushfire
hazard and protection, vegetation clearance, creeping urbanisation, and
the loss of natural heritage values; and
-
Presentation of a range of current and alternative land use practices
that may provide solutions to these problems and pressures.
