Sustainable agri-industries neighbouring the north-eastern boundary of
the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area (GBMWHA)
Project Manager: John Merson
Funded by: Rural Industries Research & Development Corporation (RIRDC)
Timeframe: July 2004 – April 2008
Investigators: Dr John Merson (University of NSW), Assoc. Prof. Rob Mulley (University
of Western Sydney), Assoc. Prof. Sandy Booth, Dr Roger Attwater, Dr Marnie Campbell, Dr Monica Nugent.
Overview:
This research
project addressed the ‘edge relationships’ between the World Heritage
Area and the urban, rural and industrial interface. This included
exploring more sustainable alternatives for economic production and
development around the edges of the WHA, which are more compatible with
World Heritage values, and focusing on better integration between
‘on-park’ and ‘off-park’ management.
This project sought to find
approaches that resolved conflicting perspectives and met the common
interest, and find opportunities for complementary activities that maximised
benefits to landholders on the edge, while enhancing the extension of
buffer areas around the WHA.
This project was completed in April 2008 and the final report was published by RIRDC in March 2009.
