About the Blue Mountains World Heritage Institute

The BMWHI Brochure

The Blue Mountains World Heritage Institute (BMWHI) was formed in 2004 primarily to:

  • identify, initiate and coordinate cross-disciplinary research to inform policy and management; and to
  • build collaboration between the range of stakeholders concerned with the GBMWHA

Three universities and five government agencies became founding partners and research, arts and education programs commenced.

Research and related activities are conducted within three broad program areas:

BMWHI activities are guided by the UNESCO World Heritage Convention. Adopting these principles, the Institute works to foster greater knowledge, understanding and conservation of the natural values and beauty of this extraordinary area, just sixty kilometres west of Sydney.

BMWHI values the knowledge and culture of the Traditional Owners of the World Heritage Area and other Aboriginal communities in the region.

The Institute
  • acts as a knowledge broker, bringing together academic, regulatory and community interests in the policy and management process
  • defines and implements research projects across a range of disciplines including biodiversity, ecosystem management and socio-economic issues
  • runs seminars and workshops on issues relating to the GBMWHA
  • develops and conducts education programs which promote understanding and appreciation of World Heritage values and foster responsible stewardship
