Experience: Peter Shadie has over 35 years’ experience working in conservation both in Australia and abroad. He spent the early part of his career with the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service before taking up a position with IUCN’s Global Protected Areas Programme in Switzerland in 1999. IUCN, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature is the oldest and largest conservation network in the old. Peter was Executive Director for the 2003 IUCN World Parks Congress which is a one in ten-year global event for parks and protected areas. From 2006 to 2010 Peter was the Head of IUCN’s Protected Areas Programme in Asia, based in Bangkok and leading the Union’s protected area work across 23 countries.
Since 2010 Peter has been based in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney where he works as a freelance consultant specialising in protected areas and World Heritage. His clients include government bureaucracies, non-government organisations and the private sector. Peter has also been a Member of IUCN’s World Heritage Panel for more than 10 years and is IUCN’s Senior Advisor on World Heritage. He is a member of the World Commission on Protected Areas and an advisor on a number of Specialist groups.
